How much should I pay for used furniture on Facebook Marketplace in St. John's?
Short answer
Solid wood and good upholstered pieces in clean condition: 30 to 50 percent of what a new one costs delivered to St. John's. Flat-pack and particleboard: 10 to 20 percent, and only if it has never been taken apart.
Start from the delivered price, not the sticker
New furniture reaches the island by ferry and truck, and that freight is either built into the price or charged as delivery, often $60 to $300 on a big piece. The delivered price is the ceiling for anything used. Trucking groups have said for years that ferry rates feed straight into what things cost here.
Rules of thumb
- Solid wood (dressers, tables, hutches): 30 to 50 percent of new. More if the brand no longer ships to NL.
- Couches and mattresses: 20 to 40 percent, and only after seeing it in daylight. Pet hair and smoke are dealbreakers.
- IKEA and other flat-pack: 10 to 20 percent. Cam locks and screws rarely survive a second assembly.
- "Free, you haul": still worth a scan. Moving is usually the reason, not the condition.
Ask before you drive
Age, why they are selling, any water damage, and whether it fits your vehicle. Bring a tape measure and small bills.
