Is it worth buying used appliances in Newfoundland?
Short answer
Often, yes. A fridge, washer or dryer under about seven years old from a known brand is worth 30 to 50 percent of new, and you skip the freight and delivery a new one carries here. Skip anything you cannot run before paying.
The delivered price is the comparison
New appliances here include freight and usually a delivery charge, which is why a good used one holds value. Find the manufacture date on the label inside the door and rule out anything past eight to ten years: parts and efficiency both fall off.
Test before cash
Run a wash cycle, confirm the fridge is cold and the compressor cycles, check the dryer heats. "Renovating" and "moving" are normal reasons to sell; "it just needs a part" is not your problem to take on.
Moving it
A fridge travels upright. Budget a truck and two people, or $50 to $100 for a hauler, and count that in your offer.
