When is yard sale season in Newfoundland, and how do I haggle?
Short answer
Late May to September, Saturday mornings, weather permitting. Offer 25 to 50 percent under the sticker with cash in hand, bundle items, and come back after noon when sellers want it gone.
Timing
The first dry Saturdays in late May start it. The biggest weekends land around moving season (end of June, end of August) and the community-wide sales in Conception Bay South, Paradise and Mount Pearl. Rain cancels; check the group the night before.
Haggling that works
- "What is the best you would do on these three?" beats haggling one item at a time.
- Small bills. Nobody has change for a fifty at 8 a.m.
- Do not halve the good stuff. Offer 70 percent on quality items and it usually goes.
- After noon everything is negotiable.
